Cleanup benefits all

Otsego County is expected to fall more than 1,000 tons below its quota of deliveries to the Montgomery-Otsego-Schoharie Solid Waste Management Authority this year.

And if the county doesn't meet its quota, it will cost taxpayers $106 per ton.

To help close the gap, the county is again offering a fall cleanup program in the upcoming weeks.

Items including furniture, rugs, carpeting, mattresses, box springs, toys, textiles, rubble, yard waste and construction and demolition debris will all be collected through the program.

Community members are being given the opportunity to prevent the county from bleeding money. At the same time, they can help themselves by getting rid of unwanted items.

The timing of the program is beneficial, as it gives residents a chance to tidy up before the winter weather settles in.

Residents may deliver garbage at the Northern Transfer Station in Fly Creek from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 16, 19 and 30 and Dec. 3. Deliveries to the Southern Transfer Station in Oneonta will be accepted from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 5 through 16. We encourage everyone to take advantage of the opportunity.

{"Headline24"/}Take in local arts scene

{"Body Text Edit"/}Technology often dominates the entertainment realm, but we hope that what the community has to offer won't be overlooked, particularly with the hustle and bustle of the local arts scene lately.

It's fall play season, and in the past two weeks alone, schools and theater groups have announced a variety of performances: "Damn Yankees" at Schenevus, "Gypsy" in Sidney, "Arsenic and Old Lace" at Charlotte Valley, "West Side Story" at Cooperstown, "The Beverly Hillbillies" at Cherry Valley-Springfield, "Proof" at SUNY Oneonta, and "A Nice Family Gathering" in South Kortright and Worcester. And school holiday concerts are just around the corner.

School-based entertainment is just one facet of the local entertainment scene, which encompasses a myriad of art exhibits, musicians, comedy events, workshops and craft shows. There's undoubtedly something for everyone, and events are held everywhere, from hamlets to the city.

Many of the options are low-cost, and a good portion are free. They provide a chance to support fellow community members and local students, who work hard to provide a project they believe will enlighten or just brighten the day of the audience members.

We hope everybody makes an effort to get out to at least some of these events, which add texture and culture to our area.
