Vote for candidate, not the party

Partisan politics has made our federal government darn near dysfunctional. If a member of one party puts forward an idea, the other side shouts it down just because it came from someone in the other party, without regard for merit. Heaven forbid that someone from the other party gets credit for a good idea!

Fortunately, we do not see the same extent of partisanship at the local level. For the most part, our town and county elected officials work collaboratively. This is not to say they all always agree, because they often disagree, even with members of their own party. But, when they disagree, the disagreement is usually based on merit, not party affiliation.

The same holds true for local voters. History shows us that Otsego County residents vote for a person, not for his or her party. As I continue my campaign, which will hopefully end with my election to the County Board of Representatives, I routinely encounter voters of both parties, and of a third party or no party, who proudly tell me that they choose a candidate to support based on the qualities of the candidate without regard for his or her political party.

That is how it should be. Vote the person, not the party.

Edward T. Lentz

New Lisbon

Lentz is a candidate to represent District 5 (Hartwick, Milford, New Lisbon) on the Otsego County Board of Representatives.
