Flooding shows city has work to do

Was I surprised to come home from a vacation to find that the Oneonta Creek had flooded once again! The mayor repeatedly said at the hearings for the Hillside Commons project that the city had corrected the flooding problem.

The mud levels below my house are several feet high and show that the water did not stay in the river channel. Once again, my 2-year-old trees were wiped out. The sidewalk to the high school has fallen down at the bridge and the river bank is eroded in the park. All of this without the additional water from the Commons roofs and parking for 300 cars that will be piped into the Oneonta Creek.

The people in the downtown area should be ready to evacuate at all times. The city needs to stop using quick solutions and run a drain pipe from the new development to the sewer treatment plant. We don’t want to be another Johnstown.
