Student apartments will benefit center city

Hillside Commons may be the best thing to happen to Center City Oneonta in a long time. The area landlords of student rentals have drastically changed the character of Center City streets — note the recent heroin bust at 40 Maple St.

Most houses seem overcrowded with students. Landlords allow the yards and landscape to deteriorate, trash blowing and cars parked all over. Students are not to blame for the lack of upkeep or inadequate parking, given how much money their landlords collect.

So now with Hillside Commons, these landlords will face competition for the rent money parents pay for student rentals. Great! Maybe they will clean up their act and make their houses more desirable for everyone.

Landlords no longer rule. It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood.
