In Our Opinion: Cheers

To those who organized and participated in the annual Goodyear Lake Polar Bear Jump.

This winter tradition raised more than $107,000 for area residents in need — mostly young people with debilitating and costly medical conditions. Some of the proceeds also went to local organizations such as Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc.

We’re not sure which is more amazing — that this all-volunteer effort manages to raise so much money each year, or that so many people are willing to jump through the ice into the frigid waters of Goodyear Lake. Both are a testament to how much people in this area care about helping others.

We’re thrilled to see another successful Polar Bear Jump, and will be excited to see the event celebrate its 20th year in 2015.

To the Region 13 Odyssey of the Mind tournament.

The Feb. 15 competition, held at the Harrold Campus of the Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego BOCES, hosted 45 teams from local schools. Teams of students ranging in age from elementary to high school competed in problem-solving activities to win a chance to compete at the state tournament in April.

Odyssey of the Mind teaches children creativity, teamwork, problem-solving and a host of other skills. The “problems” are also designed so that young people can have fun in the process. It’s great to see so many local schools participating and offering this opportunity to students.

The local OM programs wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of lots of volunteers. We applaud all those who donate their time to make OM possible for local youths. Best of luck to the teams from the Sherburne-Earlville, Norwich, Laurens, Greene, Cherry Valley-Springfield and Schenevus school districts, who will be competing at states.
