In Our Opinion: Cheers

To the more than half a million dollars in state grant money to the Otsego County Wireless Network.

The money is part of more than $9 million in New York State Broadband Grants announced by Gov. Andrew Cuomo last month.

The grants by Empire State Development will support five projects that will expand access to broadband services for about 33,000 households, 4,500 businesses and 55 community anchor institutions across the upstate area.

“Expanding our telecommunications infrastructure is one way we can grow local economies and improve the quality of life for New Yorkers,” Cuomo said in the release.

We couldn’t agree with that statement more. There are too many areas of Otsego County in which broadband is not available. For businesses to start or expand in the area and for our communities to grow, reliable communication methods are essential. We’re glad to see the number of those lacking coverage in our county will get smaller thanks to these funds.

To Brewery Ommegang for its “Karaoke Against Cancer,” a silent auction and karaoke event that benefited two local cancer patients and The Bob Simon/Loretta Anagnost Patient Assistance Fund at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown.

This year’s event was co-organized by Brewery employee Amy Mulligan, in whose honor the event was held last year. She was diagnosed with advanced stage Hodgkin’s lymphoma when she was pregnant with twins. She underwent chemotherapy during the second half of her pregnancy.

Mulligan now has a clean bill of health, and she and her husband, Wes, welcomed sons Jackson and Nolan in April. Mulligan is back working part time at the brewery.

We glad Mulligan is doing well and are happy to see she was able to help out on the cause that helped her last year. The event is a fun way to raise money for a good cause.
