In Our Opinion: Cheers

(Continued)

To the One Billion Rising For Justice event at the State University College of Technology at Delhi last month.

Subtitled “Rise, Release, and Dance,” the event was part of a campaign designed to call attention to and end violence against women. The figure of 1 billion refers to the statistic that one in three women worldwide will be raped or beaten in her lifetime.

Local activists, Delaware County’s Safe Against Violence and SUNY Delhi’s Peer Educator Group brought together about 50 supporters to dance to a five-minute song bringing awareness and encouragement to stop violence against women on the college’s campus. Men and women participated in the dance.

“Women are important. We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for our mothers,” participant Tim Sogbadjor said.

We applaud everyone who took time to participate in this unique way of bringing attention to an issue that affects so many.
