True 'legends' in Vietnam were U.S. soldiers

Your paper had an article in October and, in my opinion, the description of Gen Vo Nguyen Giap, “the brilliant ruthless commander who led a ragtag army of guerrillas to victory in Vietnam over the French and then the Americans,” is false.

I was a 20-year-old Army infantry soldier with the 25th Inf. Div. in an area called the “Iron Triangle” in 1969. Most of us never knew of Vo Nguyen Giap, so he is not a legend to us. Ho Chi Minh was a trail in the jungles of Cambodia and Laos. The Vietcong used this trail to sneak supplies down to the south.

The so-called “peace movement,” no support of the U.S. government, and the South Vietnam Army stopped us from winning the outcome of the war. Every battle we fought, we won. We were always told to give up the ground we fought for and many died for — what a terrible loss of lives and money. We were not allowed to win that war, as we are not allowed to win the wars we are in today.

The only legends in that war were our men and woman who died in that war. If we go to war, we should only go to win. Don’t tie our hands, don’t give us time limits, let us do what we have to do to get the intelligence we need to keep us safe and free.
