Meredith should act on frack ban

The Daily Star

---- — What good news that two-thirds of Otsego County residents now live in communities with bans or moratoriums on shale fracking (Daily Star, Dec. 13).

The issue of a ban puts Delaware County’s town of Meredith at a crossroads — this after five years of hard work by outgoing supervisor Keitha Capouya and three years of study by our town board. Finally, the Meredith board has drafted a law to prohibit the kinds of heavy industrial uses that can cause significant environmental damage. Citizens, Republicans and Democrats alike, have contributed ideas to the drafting of this law.

The proposed “Prohibition of Heavy Industrial Uses Local Law”, from the outpouring of support evidenced at this week’s two public hearings, and by an earlier town-wide survey, is embraced by the great majority of Meredith citizens.

The careful consideration, the study, the talk have gone on long enough. Without further delay, we must move forward to protect our town from the effects of heavy corporate industries.

I urge Meredith’s town board to vote NOW to ban heavy industrial uses.

Please, let us join all those towns who, through law, protect their water, land, and the character of their communities.
