In Our Opinion: Cheers

To those who took time out of their Christmas to make meals for others.

Nearly 450 were served at the community meal in Oneonta, with about 300 at the First United Methodist Church and almost 150 delivered to those who couldn’t make it to the site. A meal event was also held in Walton.

First-time Oneonta event co-organizer Kelly Ahlqvist said she has been volunteering for several years so she was ready to take on more of a leadership role.

“It’s such a great event,” she said. “There are so many people that come and help.”

While she attends Christmas celebrations before and after the dinner, she said, “I meet so many nice people (at the dinner). It makes the day more enjoyable.”

That worked both ways. The volunteers made the day enjoyable for those who may not have the means to have a Christmas meal or may not have had anyone to share it with.

Meals like these show the Christmas spirit is alive and well.

To Lester Constable of Unadilla, who has been a cooperative weather observer for the National Weather Service for 50 years.

Constable and 30-year weather observer David Mattice were honored at a special awards presentation and lunch held at the Trackside Diner in Sidney earlier this month.

Both men have taken temperature and precipitation measurements each day for decades to help the NWS track weather patterns and provide information about current conditions.

Both say they have no plans to retire anytime soon.

We thank Constable, Mattice and all of the local weather observers for reliably providing valuable information about our weather.

To Jordan Beers on scoring her 2,000th point as a member of the Franklin girls varsity basketball team.

Beers, a senior, on Dec. 19 became only the 11th girl in Section Four to reach 2,000 points. She reached the 1,000-point mark as a sophomore.
