In Your Opinion: Public sent message to special interests

I am a member of a fifth-generation farming and logging family of Chenango County. I now live just over the border in Otsego County. I would like to thank the voters in both counties that voted in November’s town board elections.

It made me proud to be an American to see communities come together and take part in the democratic process on a local level, even though big money and outside special interests played a roll with their million-dollar TV ads and robotic phone calls pushing their agenda to keep us hooked on fossil fuels. You sent a message all the way to Albany that you want a say if our counties and my hometown of Oxford are fracked.

We have intelligent, hard-working citizens shaping our local communities as well as the entire Empire State. The future depends on us being personally involved in our economic growth. We cannot afford to chase short-term results. Greed can not be allowed to govern the quality of development or quality of life we live in our communities.

Why are a handful of New Yorkers so quick to sue their own towns and state before Gov. Cuomo finishes his “secret health review” on the impacts of horizontal hydrofracking? The state of Maryland won’t have its health study finished until August.

Is greed so blinding that all common sense and respect for your state and neighbors are trumped by your own self-interest? The verdict is still out if we should be fracking the land that feeds us!

I would like to say thank you to everyone that has made Gov. Cuomo hold the state of New York to a higher standard. Let the new era of renewables shine through on all of us to power The new New York.
