In Your Opinion: Volunteers are fine, but system needs work

Volunteers are fine, but system needs work

Mr. Wyckoff, as a former volunteer, I do greatly admire those who volunteer. I stopped volunteering when I assisted the coroner in placing a burned 6-month-old baby into a body bag.  Although it was a while ago and the protocol might have changed some, I do know how it works.

I am aware that some of the responders go to the call directly, bypassing the station. But, Mr. Wyckoff, why didn’t you address the Cooperstown Medical Transport section in your response? How many calls does it cover annually for the Grand Gorge area? In 2002, it was the same. My back went out and I was transported by CMT. How many times does CMT have to respond because there is no one who can lift the stretcher? My wife called at 6:30 a.m. and CMT came at 7:30 a.m. Should I go on? If I were to get the CMT stats, what would they say?

How little you know about how rural other states in this great country truly are. Driving 20 miles to respond to a call in Desoto County is not “a fire station every corner”! When I lived in Florida, they only had three (all-volunteer) stations in my county for an area two-thirds the size of Delaware County. There were so many calls they had no choice but to make it a full-time fire department.

My article was not a hit piece on volunteers as you have made it out to be. I at least have been honest about what I see in the community. As with most people that feel guilt, they often suggest the other person should leave for the sake of the status quo. At least I know where I stand.
