In Our Opinion: Cheers

To the installation of a prescription drug drop-off box in the Oneonta Public Safety Building.

The box is a partnership between Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals and the Oneonta Police Department, and will be a place where people can dispose of unused and unwanted prescription drugs.

Lt. Douglas Brenner said he has seen countless elderly people walk into the Oneonta Police Department with big bags full of old medicine they don’t how to properly discard. The drop box, he said, will provide a more efficient way to do this.

Anyone can drop off prescription and over-the-counter medications in any container. Liquids and needles will not be accepted. After drugs are dropped off, they will be turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The box serves many purposes. It gives people an environmentally friendly way to dispose of unused or outdated medications, lessens the chance of a medication mix-up, and helps combat prescription-drug theft.

We hope to see more of these boxes throughout the area.
