I had a few problems with your editorial of Aug. 29 about Lt. Gov. Duffy’s real estate purchase. First, where did the figure for the market value come from? Second, even if it is reliable, the $35,000 difference between it and the actual sale price is 6 percent, the amount a real estate broker would have taken.
Ms. Parker would have netted the same amount had she listed it with a broker — hardly the recipe for much of a sweetheart deal! I do admit that you are correct in thinking that they should have disclosed the sale to the state’s Joint Commission on Public Ethics, but the deal itself is not unethical. I have bought property from friends/neighbors without the use of real estate agents and the deals have been structured similarly.
