To the annual Waffles and Puppets, which marked Brewery Ommegang’s 16th birthday and helped raise money for the Cooperstown Rotary Club.

The two-day celebration featured many family-family friendly events, including live shows by The Puppet People from Albany, magic shows, craft vendors, face-painting, bounce houses, games, a balloon artist, and a book tent where children were able to select a book to take home. There was also the featured Belgian-style waffles and other food items, and, of course, Ommegang beer for sale.

The event is the Rotary Club’s major annual fundraiser, with proceeds to benefit community programs such as the Cooperstown Food Pantry, the Angel Network, village parks and youth organizations such as Scout troops and Girls on the Run. The Rotary eRacer: the Run to Erase Polio, a 5k fun run/3k walk, was held for the first time this year.

Nonperishable food items were also collected to benefit United Way food banks.

It’s good to see an event that offers families a fun time while helping an organization that benefits so many.

To the recently formed Canadarago Lake Partnership, which held its first public meeting last week.

The partnership consists of the Canadarago Lake Improvement Association, the municipalities with borders on the lake, the Soil and Water Conservation Districts of Otsego and Herkimer Counties and the SUNY Oneonta Biological Field Station.

The meeting came as survey results from a direct mailing to all watershed area residents have been tabulated. Among the top concerns were sanitary waste, invasive species, flooding and algae blooms.

The Canadarago Lake Watershed Protection Plan will be drafted by the partnership members in the months to come.

It’s important to bring all stakeholders together to decide how best to manage the lake. We’re glad to see the group formed, and encourage all who are impacted by or have an impact on Canadarago Lake to become involved.
