In Our Opinion: Cheers

To the Grand and Glorious Garage Sale and the City of the Hills Arts and Music Festival, held Sept. 14 in downtown Oneonta.

The Community Arts Network of Oneonta decided to move its annual festival to coincide with the Catskill Choral Society’s annual fundraiser.

CANO also expanded its offerings, moving into the Dietz Street lot and adding music throughout the day.

Participants of the CANO event were mixed on the change.

Allison Jones, who competed in the juried art show, said early in the day that, “The people just aren’t coming in. This change in date was supposed to be a complement to the Grand and Glorious, but people coming here from the yard sale want a bargain. Here at the art festival, we have artisan prices.”

But others said the crowd was good, especially as the day wore on.

“This has been a great show,” photographer Kevin Gray said. “People who are coming out are looking for art. The conversations have been good. People are interested in my art and my technique.”

It seemed the events could play well off of each other, as both were to benefit local arts groups. And because they were such different events, different groups of people would be drawn to downtown Oneonta. It was a good experiment. We encourage CANO to review the festival and refine its approach to keep this idea alive.

T o the Greater Oneonta Historical Society and Main Street, for hosting “Looking Up! A Tour of Downtown Upper Floors” on Sept. 15.
