Town of Oneonta residents have been well-represented by Rich Murphy the past several years, first as town board member and then as county board representative, and I would like to express my appreciation to him for his dedication. Fortunately, town voters have a qualified successor willing and able to continue the hard work and reasoned consideration we have come to expect from our representative, and that is Dan Buttermann.
I recently had the opportunity for a lengthy conversation with Dan, and I found him to be intelligent, thoughtful, and enthusiastic in discussing his hopes and plans for our town and county. He obviously has spent much time and effort studying and considering the important issues facing county government — issues such as a fair distribution of tax dollars, long-range methods to build the local economy, preparing for the end of MOSA, and long-term planning for the future. When I asked him about a specific concern of mine, the increased partisanship of the county board, he assured me that he, too, had given that much thought and is eager to work with all representatives, regardless of political affiliation, to resolve important issues. Further, he feels that his background in working with all parties in insurance claims and negotiating settlements gives him a unique perspective and experience to do just that.
Although we are losing a hard-working and very able representative with Rich Murphy’s decision to step down, I believe Dan will be an equally conscientious and well-informed county board member. I urge town residents to cast their votes for Dan Buttermann on election day.
