---- — Truth stretched on both sides of frack debate

Dick Downey’s commentary regarding the film “Promised Land” brought up some interesting points.

Dick pointed to the movie “taking liberties with the truth.” This is to be expected from a Hollywood movie. Hollywood tends to reduce subjects to simple morality plays it feels people will understand. Mr. Downey has also taken liberties with the truth. His statistics on current renewable output are based on current production, which actually points to the need for more renewable energy. Regarding Germany, it continues to push toward renewable energy, Mr. Downey.

Mr. Downey alluded to the renewable industry “gobbling up government subsidies.” How much assistance has the fossil fuel Industry received from our government? Regarding the idea of using “best practices from other states” for the DEC study, there has not been a push by the gas industry to achieve best practices regarding safety. It has been reluctant to disclose what chemicals are utilized during the fracking process. It will do as little as required. It is concerned primarily with the bottom line. There really is no best practice at this time. Your attitude seems to be that if only a few people are affected negatively as a result of fracking, so be it.

How many locals actually benefited and how many have been negatively impacted by fracking in places such as Pennsylvania? Relying on the gas industry to bring prosperity to our area is ludicrous. It will take profit from the resources in our area and very little money will remain here. It will not be here years from now to clean up the results of having been here. Our children and grandchildren will. This is typical of industry. We can’t afford to be lazy about this.

Do the research, folks. There is no easy money.
