Street Talk: Feb. 4, 2013

Do you think that sports teams with names such as Redskins should change their name?

“I don’t. The name Redskin shows how they are strong so the name is positive.”

Dominick Parker, Stamford, student.

“I think it should, from the point of a view of a culture that has been abused, they shouldn’t be referred to in a derogatory way.”

Michael Stolzer, Oneonta, apartment owner.

“They should. If they were the Washington Black-skins that wouldn’t have lasted, why should Redskins?”

Anne Reynolds, Oneonta, waitress.

“I think people are too worried about being politically correct, so if the team wants to change it that’s fine.”

Kara Newman, Oneonta, waitress.

“Especially for the pro level there is a huge value in their name, so changing it seems like a bad idea.”

Dave McKee, Oneonta, retired.

“I don’t think they should. I only have the experience of a white person, so maybe I would think differently if I was Native American.”

Mike Rednour, Delhi, self employed.
