Kudos to those who don't spread germs

---- — I was very impressed by the phlebotomist who attended to me while at a recent visit to the Bassett Hospital in Delhi this past weekend. I noticed that she was wearing a mask, and I was under the assumption that she was wearing it because of the big flu scare, but when I asked her if she was trying to avoid catching the flu, she said that she wasn’t trying to avoid catching the flu, but that she did have a cold.

I believe this is the first time I have ever come across someone wearing their mask out in public, so that they don’t spread their germs. It is possible, I suppose, that in all the years I have been going to doctors/dentists/hospitals, etc., that no one has felt ill, but I can’t imagine that.

I know that, at least where I work, there are many people who come to work and are obviously sick — this includes me as well. I’ve thought about wearing a mask at times, but probably because of the embarrassment it would cause, I don’t. I would assume that this is the main reason nobody wears one (who wants to stick out like a sore thumb and get asked a hundred times why they’re wearing it?).

Anyway, I’d like to give a big shout-out of thanks to her. I realize there is an unwritten rule in many places that says “if you don’t feel well, don’t come to work.” Given limited (or no) sick days/vacation time/personal time or because people want to save their time for vacations, etc., people may not follow this. Maybe all businesses, schools, etc., should take a second look at this topic, which would be good for everyone.
