Cheers and Jeers

To the members of Otsego County Board of Representatives for their response in the wake of their decision to sell the county-run Otsego Manor.

Rather than provide county residents with an opportunity to respond at public meetings to the possibility of the sale, the board scheduled informational events weeks after the decision had been made.

And the meetings called by the county were specifically called for the board to tell residents about the details of the sale, not to allow people to effectively voice their opposition.

These meetings are another example of too little, too late by the board. If it wanted to give residents an explanation of why the Manor needed to be sold, the board should have done so before it voted, not after. This would have allowed a chance for possible viable alternatives to the sale.

While the financial straits the county faces may have forced the board to sell the Manor, the way in which it has handled that eventuality show a lack of foresight and interest in keeping residents informed.

To U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., for pushing initiatives to boost Greek yogurt production in the area and statewide.

Schumer said, “Upstate New York was recently dubbed the ‘Silicon Valley of Greek Yogurt,’ and I want our dairy farmers to keep pace with that exciting growth in a way that stabilizes risk from them during the up-and-downs of the market.”

That way, according to Schumer, is the Dairy Augmentation for Increased Retail in Yogurt Products Act, which will establish federal savings accounts targeted to help farmers save and grow during booms and busts of the economy. The accounts would provide savings when business is strong and defer taxes during slow periods.

Another bill Schumer introduced will allow farmers to purchase cows in production to write off the cows as a capital expense, which will lower their overall tax burden.
