Assessor job was filled with fond memories

As the former city assessor for the city of Oneonta for the last 27 years, I’ve been planning to retire for the last couple of years. My decision to “call it a day” was not an easy one, because I loved my job and I am going to miss it. Nevertheless, I believe that the time has come to fade away. My last day in the “dungeon” was Sept. 6.

I had the honor of working under four amazingly capable mayors; but my deepest appreciation rests on Mayor David Brenner who was always there as a mentor and friend. I am leaving a wonderful career behind; and I think that I gave it a good run. I have tried to be as fair, considerate and, at times, compassionate of the taxpayer. Conversely, I believe that the taxpayer has returned that fairness, consideration, and compassion back to me tenfold.

I have always based my decisions in the best interest of our city; never used the process to punish or reward; and had the character and courage to do what in my heart was the right thing to do. I’d like to believe that I have built and kept a reputation of friendly openness, integrity, and professionalism in the Office of City Assessor.

As everything in life, time goes on and eventually comes to an end … the sun goes down, the tide recedes, and the music stops … but for every joy that passes, something beautiful remains … and that’s all of you, the wonderful people of Oneonta that I had the pleasure to meet, and assist. Although one never forgets the respected colleagues and the true friends, I trust that I can see some of you every so often; and I can only hope that I can see some of you again.

God bless you all…
