In Our Opinion: Cheers

To Coach Dave Kelly for nearly a half century of service to the Delaware Academy in Delhi.

Kelly announced last month he would retire after 48 seasons of coaching the Bulldogs varsity football team.

Kelly will leave Delhi with 272 career football victories, which ranks second in Section Four. Walton coach Jim Hoover has 298 victories in 38 seasons.

Kelly led Delhi to the Class C state championship in 2001, capping a 12-1 season with a 39-21 victory over Cambridge in the state final.

His Bulldogs made nine postseason appearances, including five berths during Section Four’s bowl era, from 1980 to 1992. Delhi also won four Section Four titles during the state-tournament era starting in 1993.

Delhi’s last appearance in a state tournament ended with a 28-0 Class D quarterfinal loss to Onondaga in 2006.

Kelly was inducted into the Section Four Hall of Fame in 2009. He served the Section Four Football Conference as its vice chairman and was the Division V representative this past season.

We applaud Kelly for his decades of dedication to Delhi and wish him the best in his retirement.

To everyone who volunteered time to create free Thanksgiving meals, including those in Oneonta, Oxford and Walton.

Scores of people across the region took time out of their holiday to cook turkeys, mash potatoes, bake pies, set up sites, deliver dinners, serve the meals and clean up, so those in need of the food or company could have a joyous Thanksgiving dinner.

“You see people from all walks of life coming in to share a Thanksgiving meal,” Judy McMullen, co-chairwoman of the meal in Oneonta, said leading up to the event. “It’s just a heart-warming thing happening in our community. … It’s great to see the smiles.”

We truly are thankful for those who made Thanksgiving special for others.

To four University Police Department officers and a retired chief at SUNY Oneonta for being honored by the SUNY officials.
