The Daily Star
---- — Two recent columns and a letter in The Daily Star prompt me to offer a response. Mr. Vernold, in a long column, questioned what tyranny in fact was. Webster’s unabridged has several definitions boiling down to the fact that individuals lose control of the decisions controlling their lives. This can happen quickly as in Nazi Germany or gradually as in Western democracies.
Mr. Czechowski, a high school sophomore, states that envy is a bigger problem than made out to be. However, at least since the Ten Commandments, coveting what others have is regarded as a sin. The implications of envy in a one-vote, one-person unlimited democracy are immense, as the founders realized when discussing the tyranny of the majority.
Mr. Kaplan wrote that he could be happy in a society where everyone was equal. The fact that this has been tried many times and always leads to disaster when forced, does not concern him.
