Cheers

To Hartwick College and SUNY Oneonta organizers of OH-Fest for working with the city of Oneonta to bring the annual concert back to Neahwa Park.

While past shows had been in the park, last year saw the music moved to the State University College at Oneonta campus.

Incidents at the 2011 concert, featuring rapper Pitbull, caused by a large, rowdy crowd, seemed to sour the collaboration between the schools and the city.

It is good to see all sides making an effort to bring back an important and entertaining option that allows students and community members to interact. The downtown carnival, another outstanding community event organized by students, will once again be a part of OH-Fest, too.

As part of the agreement with the city, the college agreed to hire private security for the event, which downtown promotion group Main Street Oneonta has stepped up to help fund.

This allows the police department to better protect the community rather than focusing on crowd control.

To Arthur and Joy Miller of Burlington Flats for pledging their time and efforts to help their son’s Army medical unit in Afghanistan.

Staff Sgt. Jared Miller is part of the 691st Forward Surgical Team, an Army Reserve unit based in Utica. The group has been serving in Afghanistan since October.

Upon hearing their son and his unit no longer received hot breakfasts, the couple began sending boxes of oatmeal, Pop Tarts, pancake mix, jelly and more to Afghanistan.

Each week for about six weeks, box after box, the Millers have been sending care packages from home to feed their son and his fellow service men and women.

In addition to the Millers, mention should be made of those at New York Central Mutual Insurance Co. who donate breakfast items and ship the boxes to the front.
