Don't let industry 'get away with it'|

---- — (Because of a technical error, a letter from this writer that appeared in Friday’s Daily Star was one that had been previously printed.)

There was an article in the Sept. 26 Daily Star that caught my interest titled, “Hudson dredging season nears end.” Having lived near the Hudson River for many years, I was aware of the problem of PCBs being dumped into the river by General Electric. However, I was unaware that the removal of contaminated sediment was still ongoing.

How many years, how much money, how much damage to the water has been done because a company was allowed to “get away with it.”

The point I am making is this. When corporations are allowed to pollute, we, the American people, end up suffering the consequences in many ways, i.e., footing the bill for the cleanup, damage to our health and the health of wildlife, destruction of pristine environments, etc.

In the above case, GE has been fined, but probably isn’t paying the full shot. No matter, this should never have happened.

Now, in our state, there is controversy over fracking. Given the possibility of long-term effects, this is understandable.

We already know that some insurance companies will not insure properties where fracking is allowed, and some banks will not give out mortgages. They know, as we know, that in the future there may be a price, too heavy, to pay.
