Voters should get informed, vote

Voters should get informed, vote

Election Day is just around the corner. Despite the fact that this is an “off-year election,” with no federal or statewide offices in play, it is important that Otsego County residents who are eligible actually get out and vote.

On Nov. 5, voters will choose a treasurer, county representatives and local officials, including judges, supervisors, councilmen, clerks and highway superintendents. Whom we select for these positions directly affects each of us and the communities in which we live. In addition, there are six statewide proposals on the ballot, including one concerning casino gambling. Sample ballots can be viewed  at www.otsegocounty.com/depts/boe/.

For voters who have not yet made up their minds, it’s not too late. Among the things voters can consider are which candidates are best qualified based on background and experience; what positions the candidates have on important issues such as fracking, a county manager, the Manor, economic development, etc.; and which candidates have demonstrated a genuine desire to serve.

In some cases, information about candidates for office can be hard to come by. That is unfortunate and suggests that a candidate does not really want the job or for other reasons does not want voters to learn about him or her. Candidates who are serious about being elected should also be serious about earning your vote.

In my own case, I have been working hard to help voters get to know me, including by sending letters to voters, going door-to-door (approximately 350 homes as of this writing), and attending various public functions. If anyone would like more information about me, I can be reached at 263-5425 or edlentz@mac.com, or via Facebook at Edward T. Lentz.
