People deserve better in District 2|

The Daily Star

---- — As candidate for county board, I have knocked on hundreds of doors to ask support of voters from District 2 (Butternuts, Morris, Pittsfield). There is always a degree of hesitation before knocking on each door.

An unexpected visitor is not at the top of anyone’s wish list. It’s never a good time to time to “bother” people, who must fix and eat dinner, put kids to bed, milk cows, mow lawns, vacuum floors and attend to life’s daily chores. However, almost without exception, I have been received politely — often warmly, with many firm handshakes and sometimes even a hug for support.

Political campaigns can be grueling, but my favorite part is meeting people in my district. Everywhere I go, I meet decent, hard-working people who want government to work better for them. They are understandably cynical about how dysfunctional things have become, having lost patience with partisan, obstructionist politics. They feel taxes are too high, roads are poorly maintained, and essential services are not provided — or not provided well.

I cannot promise to wave a magic wand and solve all problems, but I can promise a different approach to governance — one that is proactive, not reactive. The county board should do more than put out fires as they occur. The way the Manor was dealt with is just one example of how not to go about things.

I can also promise to try to prevent problems from becoming unmanageable and to improve communications so voters know what county government does in general and what it is doing about specific issues or problems. More information may be found at http://www.winchestercountyrep.com. My opponent has had 14 years to make things better. I hope you agree it’s time to give someone else a chance.
