Don’t believe GOP is anti-fracking

A curious thing happened at the League of Women Voters debate. Curious, because if there was not an election next month, you would never have three Republican candidates endorsing an anti-fracking/gas platform with Vice Chairman of the County Republican Party Bill Mirabito sitting just feet away.

But then, who throws out the chairman of a county party and installs someone they have hired to professionally run the current campaign? A Republican Party that wraps itself around popular and thought-out Democratic views, in the strategy of nullifying their opponents and hoping the public doesn’t notice. That’s who.

The debate saw Ms. Hurley-Quackenbush agreeing wholeheartedly with Dan Buttermann on many issues and finding herself elaborating, eloquently at times, minute differing positions. Democrat Dan Buttermann, on the other hand, was well-versed on the issues and refused to be painted as a ‘one-issue’ candidate, citing his management background (he has an MBA) in responsibly increasing the sales revenue base for the town and county.

The Oneonta Town Board segment saw essentially four panelists opposing “fracking” and swearing never to do what the voters oppose. The two Democrat-endorsed candidates (Patricia Jacob and Andrew Stammel) were believable in their positions because they emphasized the long-term economic strategy needed to bring jobs to the Southside and West End of Oneonta. The Republican candidates (Fred Vople and Brett Holleran) were not believable and were almost identical in their responses — as if Vince Casale (thecasalegroup.com), and now chairman of the Otsego County Republican Party, had done a good job in keeping his candidates in line.

We need trusting, believable people running local government — we need the candidates on Row A on Nov. 5.
