A tale of two quotations

Recently, I have received two rather important quotes I had forgotten over the years.

The first was in 1959. I was 30 at that time, and Nikita Khruschev was banging his shoe on the podium in the U.N. building saying, “Your children’s children will live under communism. You Americans are so gullible. No, you won’t accept communism outright; but we’ll keep feeding you small doses of socialism until you will finally wake up and find that you already have communism. We won’t have to fight you; we’ll so weaken your economy, until you fall like overripe fruit into our hands.”

The second one is, some say, the quote of the decade: “The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our governments reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that, ‘The buck stops here.’ Instead Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.” — Sen. Barack H. Obama, March 2006
