In Our Opinion: Cheers and Jeers

To Cornell Cooperative Extension of Schoharie and Otsego Counties for putting the focus on local agriculture products at the upcoming Otsego County Fair.

“Agriculture on Parade” will showcase local agriculture at 7:30 p.m. July 30 during the opening day parade at the fair in Morris. Individuals and businesses will feature their diverse agricultural products in the parade.

County representatives will lead the parade with little red wagons filled with products from their districts. During fair week, fairgoers can view the wagons and products in Martin Hall. Products will be donated by the producers and will be auctioned Saturday, Aug. 3, with the proceeds to benefit the Otsego County 4-H Program.

CCE is still seeking participants. For more information, interested producers may call 547-2536, ext. 231, or their local county representative.

Local farms products an array of products, and we look forward to see the diversity offered.  That the proceeds from the sales of the products will benefit a program that promotes youths in agriculture is a bonus.

To local Fourth of July celebrations.

Communities across the area celebrated Independence Day with parades, fireworks, parties and more.

A longtime tradition continued with Springfield’s 99th Fourth of July parade. One viewer said she had attended the annual parade for more than half a century.

Thousands gathered in Oneonta’s Neahwa Park for the Hometown Fourth of July, and many other communities held smaller celebrations.

Hanford Mills Museum in East Meredith held its traditional celebration featuring ice cream made from ice from the winter’s ice harvest.

Other people used the holiday as a chance to gather with family and friends.

No matter how the holiday was celebrated, one thing was common — love of our nation.

We thank organizers of all of the events for giving us the opportunities to celebrate that love.

To the “moist flow,” an unpleasant name for an even less pleasant weather phenomenon that’s left the area steaming, literally, for weeks now.
