In Our Opinion: Cheers

To the sixth annual Jason’s Run, and organizers’ continuing efforts to promote motorcycle safety.

The motorcycle and car ride started in 2009 in memory of Jason Vagliardo. He was 22 when he died in a motorcycle accident Sept. 8, 2008, his mother Karen Vagliardo told The Daily Star shortly before the June 14 event.

“I didn’t want his death to be for nothing,” she said.

The event, which is supported by the American Legion Riders Post 259, has raised thousands of dollars since its inception for a variety of causes. Most visible among Vagliardo’s efforts have been the bright yellow banners, signs and posters that read “Check Twice — Save a Life — Motorcycles are Everywhere.” In addition, Vagliardo has organized safety courses for motorcycle riders.

This year’s event supported Jason’s Critical Care Animal Fund at the Community Veterinary Center, which helps families pay for medical treatment for pets.

We applaud Karen Vagliardo for serving the community her son called home with these efforts.

To a recent summit aimed at connecting local employers and educators.

Career Opportunities in Rural Education hosted the June 18 event, which included guest speakers and a panel discussion on the topic of connecting local education programs with careers in the area.

While the summit had a local focus, organizers also brought in representatives from the Mohawk Valley Regional Economic Development Council and the state Department of Labor.

We have known for years that it is challenging to keep young people in the area, as they often travel elsewhere to start their careers. We look forward to the continuation of what was started at this summit, and encourage such efforts to continue.

To efforts by Rep. Chris Gibson and other lawmakers to enhance medical treatment options for people with Lyme disease.

The disease is notoriously tricky to diagnose, and treatment options are limited. Gibson recently praised the state Senate for advancing recommendations on prevention, diagnosis and treatment of Lyme and tick-borne diseases.
