The Daily Star
---- — In response to Chuck Pinkey’s recent column:
As for the failure of the vote on the background checks, Chuck, look at the cartoon on Page 6, on Friday, April 26, of The Daily Star. Answer your question?
I liked your comment that the president and MSNBC should get together on their facts. A whole 9 percent difference. I recall the story about the buses to Albany. From one of the organizers: “only 2 incidents of shootings,” “none in N.Y.,” and “they are trying to take our guns.” Columbine, Aurora, Newton, Tucson, Webster — my count is five, a 60 percent difference. None in New York? Apparently volunteer firemen do not count. Webster is in New York state.
We are lucky here with the New York state law, Chuck. Everyone seems to be forgetting one little detail. These mentally disturbed people do not just shoot children. Movie theaters, shopping malls, even Tea Party rallies can be targets. Aren’t you glad those weapons are banned here?
In the aftermath of the gun vote, I understand some of the senators are catching some flak. Apparently they voted the way of the NRA dollar rather than the way their constituents wanted. Not their conscience, Chuck.
Now, I personally do not care for the New York state gun law, or the way it was passed. But as some of the Southwestern states passed their own immigration laws because the federal government did nothing, so New York passed a gun law. It’s more than we got from the federal government, and it’s better than no law, so be it.
Remember, if the NRA had not put pressure on Congress to not renew the ban, many people would still be alive and we would not have this law. Thank the NRA for the NY SAFE Act.
