My family learned the hard way that the state Department of Environmental Conservation introduced sarcoptic mange into our area. Our two golden retrievers were itching and chewing at themselves the whole winter. We spent thousands of dollars on allergy shots, steroids, antibiotics, vet bills, etc ... Nothing gave them relief.
Finally in March, when our poor dog had chewed her underside raw, we made another visit to our vets and received the diagnosis of sarcoptic mange. We were horrified and wondered how on earth they picked this up in our back yard in Oneonta. Our veterinarian knew. He informed us that the DEC had recently introduced it to the environment to control the fox population. If you have pets that go out, beware.
