To a $75,000 grant awarded to Hartwick College to fund student tuitions.

The grant, from The Hearst Foundation, will help defray costs for students attending the private college.

Hartwick is among 49 colleges that successfully competed to receive funding from the foundation.

In an increasingly competitive field, when a four-year degree is becoming a requirement for nearly any job-seeker, it is always good to see a helping hand extended to those who might not otherwise be able to afford the school of their choice. This helps ensure that the benefits of a college education are available to all regardless of income.

To a new public access site on the Susquehanna River.

The site will allow anglers and boaters with car-top boats to access the Susquehanna off county Route 11C in Middlefield. A partnership between the state Department of Environmental Conservation and the Otsego Land Trust ensures that the site will be maintained for public use into the future.

Enjoying the great outdoors is one of the pleasures of life in this area. We’re pleased to see that local boaters and anglers will have yet another way to do just that.

To the establishment of the Sixth Ward Athletic Association foundation.

The nonprofit organization, an offshoot of the Sixth Ward Athletic Club, seeks to promote local charitable causes and offer student scholarships. A focus will be on activities connected with youth athletics and the promotion of sportsmanship, character-building and civics.

“For years, club members have been asking to expand its annual giving programs, with an eye towards making a more-formal system,” Sixth Ward AC President Bob Thomas told The Daily Star.

The Sixth Ward AC already has a proud tradition of community service, but this effort takes it to a new level. We wish the new foundation nothing but success.
