Every second counts for stroke care

As chief of neurology at Bassett Medical Center, an advertisement placed recently in The Daily Star regarding stroke care concerns me. Albany Medical Center placed an informative, half-page color ad in The Daily Star about acute stroke care. The ad emphasized the “breakthrough technology” available in Albany and that during a stroke, every second counts.

It is especially important for people to understand that the diagnosis and treatment of stroke requires the most rapid response possible in order to achieve the best possible outcome. I also need to stress that the only clearly established acute stroke treatment is thrombolysis, or the “clot buster,” and it is available in our community at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown. Bassett is a New York state-designated Primary Stroke Center.

Seconds do count. If you think you might be having a stroke, don’t wait. Don’t call your doctor. Call 911. Remember, time lost is brain lost!
