Resort proposal is just too big
Belleayre Mountain Ski Center is a New York state taxpayer-owned recreational area. People who have paid for BMSC with their hard-earned dollars should not have to also pay for the infrastructure necessary to assure an enjoyable ski experience for the visitors to a private developer’s monster mega-mall/spa resort on a mountaintop.
The developer would like NYS taxpayers to pay $5 million for the adjoining defunct Highmount Ski center, then pay millions more in tax dollars to build lifts, additional trails, install snowmaking equipment and then foot the bill for the ongoing maintenance for such infrastructure.
This spa resort planned for Highmount ridge is proposed to be built on and into the steep slopes that are now covered with natural forestation.
The second part of the resort plan is a proposal to build lower down the mountain on the Wildacres property. This second development area is not anywhere as steep as the Highmount Ridge. The Wildacres area will be conveniently located adjacent to the surrounding BMSC recreational area and would provide guests with hotel and condo accommodations, restaurants and shops. A golf course is also planned for the Wildacres property.
The double-mega destination resort proposal is just too big and the spa portion is too high on the steep slopes.
