To the organizers and participants in the first Turkey Trot 5K to benefit Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care.

Almost 600 people showed up for the Thanksgiving morning race.

The event was the brainchild of Hospice Community Relations Coordinator Kelly McGraw.

After participating in a “turkey trot” in her hometown, McGraw said, she thought of Oneonta’s committed group of runners and wondered if the city could start its own annual race on Thanksgiving.

“The plan all along was to establish this event as a tradition that families can look forward to participating in every year around Thanksgiving,” McGraw said.

We hope that this year’s race is the first of many. It was a good way for folks to burn a few calories before the big Thanksgiving meal while raising money for a wonderful cause.

To charity trains that recently stopped in the area.

The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train made stops in Cobleskill and Oneonta on Nov. 27, and the Marine Corps Reserves’ Dunkin’ Donuts Toys for Tots Train stopped in Cobleskill, Oneonta and Bainbridge on Saturday.

Katie Hill of the CP communications department said the Holiday Train crowd was the biggest in the last four years at the Oneonta stop.

That train not only brings Santa and a half-hour performance of holiday music but also an opportunity for the company to support food programs in the communities they pass through, Hill said. She presented a $4,000 check to Opportunities for Otsego during the Oneonta stop, and the Oneonta Salvation Army will benefit from nonperishable food donated at the event.

At Toys for Tots train stops, toys and gifts purchased with a $30,000 donation from Dunkin’ Donuts were hand-delivered to local children and nonprofit organizations at each station.

The railroad has had a huge impact on the history of the region. It’s good to see the positive impact continue.
