In our Opinion: Cheers

To the 11th annual Girls on the Run of Central New York 5k race on June 2.

More than 1,000 people participated in the event at the Clark Sports Center in Cooperstown. About 600 of the participants were members of the GOTR program.

The race is the culmination of the 10-week program that starts in mid-March and ends in mid-June, but the noncompetitive race is open to all.

GOTR is a character-development program for girls in third through eighth grades, according to the organization’s website.

There are 50 teams at 30 locations in area elementary and middle schools and community centers. The program meets twice a week and include life lessons such as bullying prevention, media awareness and community service.

This is an outstanding program where young girls can learn valuable social lessons and how to stay healthy.

We applaud everyone who braved the rain and took part in the event.

To organizers and participants in the annual Sherburne Pageant of Bands.

The three-day event that started June 1 was the 64th edition of the competition, which brings together some of the best middle and high school jazz, concert, ensemble and marching bands from the region.

Laurens High School again took the Albert Whitney Overall Achievement Award. It also received best in class for division D, and won a second-place ranking in the Drum Major Award. Laurens’ band director, Dan Martin, won the Frank L. Miller Outstanding Director award again this year.

The highlight of the competition is the parade. In the past, there had more than 40 bands, but participation had dropped over the last few years, which many said was because of budget cuts in schools.

Even though the event is smaller than it once was, the pageant is still the premier showcase of area student instrumental talent, and we’re glad to see it continue.
