In Your Opinion: Forgotten committee's idea still valid

If you look carefully at the Organization Chart of the Otsego County Government, you will find, among several small boxes, something called the “Citizens Advisory Committee to the Otsego County Board of Representatives.” This committee was created in 1971, and consisted of one member appointed by each member of the board.

I do not remember those on that committee, but I recall a few friends from the board. Among them were the chairman, Jack Bresee, who recently died. Rest in peace, Jack. Also Dave Brenner, and Joe Kenyon of Worcester, who appointed me from his district.

That committee met a few times and sent a short list of recommendations to the board. This was duly acknowledged, filed and forgotten. That committee has not met for 40 years, but to my knowledge, it has not been disbanded and still officially exists. I am the only member still living. There was no term limit on membership or requirement of reappointment. Therefore, I am still a member of the Otsego County Government by virtue of survival.

The existing committee now recommends to the current board what we wanted some 40 years ago — a county executive. Come on folks, you know we need this, so DO IT.
