I am writing to share my thoughts concerning Charles Eckelmann, who is seeking another term as Butternuts Town Supervisor. During his several terms as supervisor, Mr. Eckelmann maintained a very balanced budget. Indeed during his current term, the town purchased necessary highway equipment without creating debt. Indeed, in the new town budget for 2014, taxes have not increased.
Supervisor Eckelmann runs very open and fair meetings. Under his direction, in order to accommodate special needs of some of his constituents, monthly town board meetings now have two public sessions, one at the beginning and the other at the end of the meeting. He welcomes community input, encourages persons with concerns to call him at home, if necessary, and offers to meet with constituents during regular office hours as well as by appointment at other convenient times.
In the last several years, Mr. Eckelmann, working along with a strong town board, guided the complex process required to update the more than 20-year-old Master Plan and replaced it with a new Comprehensive Plan. In order to allow time for this process, the town passed a moratorium on unconventional gas development, and is now completing the steps to prohibit this kind of industrial activity in the town of Butternuts.
Based on my personal observation of Mr. Eckelmann’s leadership during these complex processes, I have no doubt that our engaged and alert community will continue on its path to a healthy, sustainable future with clean air, clean water and clean soil.
I have no hesitation in asking my neighbors to join me in endorsing Charles Eckelmann for another term as supervisor. He deserves our vote and the town of Butternuts needs our vote.
