I have been involved more and more in Otsego County politics and its internal workings as I am a candidate for the board in Cherry Valley, Roseboom and Middlefield. What I have observed is partisan politics, which is to be expected. These political differences sometimes make it very difficult in the performance of county business.
I belong to a local/worldwide organization and have served as president of same. Our members have a myriad of political beliefs, yet we are apolitical. We set goals for the support of local and worldwide projects and then work together toward completion, regardless of opinions. I am not looking for a kumbaya moment, but the Otsego County board should set goals on the basis of what’s best for the people of Otsego County.
The goals are obvious to all. Goals such as maintaining the quality of life, keeping taxes low, attract jobs worthy of the county, watch over our elderly and less-fortunate, keeping us safe, and so on. I’ve knocked on many doors these last few weeks and this a subject, among others, that came up time and time again: the perceived ineffectiveness of the board.
A possible solution would be a county manager/executive to alleviate this bipartisan bickering. This individual would make the decisions/choices, on which the board has to act. The political bickering has to lessened, or else the county suffers!
