Delhi earns high marks on school safety

Delaware Academy Central School at Delhi is one of 133 school districts and state BOCES to receive the Utica National Insurance Group’s “School Safety Excellence Award” for 2014.

The annual award recognizes school districts’ safety efforts, and was presented at Utica National’s 34th annual school safety seminar at the DoubleTree Hotel in Binghamton.

The company, which insures more than 300 school districts in upstate New York through its program for educational institutions, is marking its 40th year.

Delhi school officials received a certificate and a $500 award to further the safety efforts.

“Safety and health concerns continue to be a priority for our school districts,” said Mark Aquino, Utica National’s regional manager in its risk management department. ‘Districts that go “above and beyond’ to provide a safe, healthy and focused culture for learning are to be applauded, and we’re pleased to count Delaware Academy Central School District at Delhi among them.”

DCMO BOCES is seeking nominations for The Marshman-Hall Commitment to Education Award. Nominations will be accepted until May 31, 2014.

The award commemorates the service of Dan Marshman and Bob Hall, both former members of the BOCES Board of Education who served their communities and the BOCES in exemplary fashion, according to a BOCES media release. It memorializes the contributions they gave to the area, and serves as a vehicle for BOCES to annually recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to education in the region.

“They believed deeply in the power of education,” and were convinced that the efforts of BOCES helps prepares area youth and adults to make this area a better place, according to the release. “They gave unselfishly of their time, their ideas, their support, and of themselves.” They are remembered by those who knew them for what they gave as board members, but “more importantly for what they gave us as people.”
