---- — Lena and Nelson Wells of Oneonta will celebrate 70 years of marriage this month.

Given in marriage by the late Rev. Harold Buckingham, Lena (Belle Martin) married Nelson Alfred Wells Sr. on Aug. 28, 1943.

They are parents to Patricia (Wells) Rotolo of Oneonta; the late Nelson Wells Jr. and wife Violet of Oneonta; Linda (Wells) Holtsmaster and husbandWalter, of South Gibson, Pa.; Sandy (Wells) Morin of Oneonta; and Ginger (Wells) Butler and husband Paul of Bunnell, Fla. They have 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

They were longtime members of West End Baptist Church then followed the Rv. Mel Farmer to River Street Baptist Church.

They have lived in Oneonta for most of their lives. Nelson served in World War II in Okinawa right after they were married and returned home at the end of war. Nelson worked as a iron worker on the colleges in Oneonta and Binghamton, the Downsville dam and then his last job was for the Oneonta treatment plant, where he had an accident that led him to retirement.

Lena worked for Kresges Department Store in Oneonta and Scintilla Plant in Sidney and A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital and the TB hospital in Oneonta.

They love to sit on their porch and just talk, most of the time holding hands while doing so. Nelson, at 88, and Lena, who will be 90 in October, still mow a large area of grass on their property. They still take rides in the car up to Cole Hill where Nelson was raised, and they go shopping. Nelson loves his tractors and working with wood. He stills cuts and splits wood for his fireplace and plants potatoes, and Lena still loves to cook and do crossword puzzles.
