James St. John

The Daily Star

---- — James St. John, lifelong resident of upstate New York, is celebrating the milestone of his 95th birthday on Sunday. Born in West Oneonta in 1919, he grew up all around the Oneonta area. He served his country in World War II in Africa and Italy before returning home in 1945.

He is the father of two girls and a boy. He and his wife, Wanda, raised them, at the family homestead on Walling Boulevard in the east end of Oneonta.

He is a graduate of Alfred State College in western New York and joined the MidState Oil and Fuel Company in Oneonta where he worked for many years and retired from there in 1979. He served on the Oneonta zoning board, he has been a member of the Masons and the American Legion for many years.

Summers were spent with family at their camp in the Adirondacks. St.John enjoyed playing golf with his family, he loved to go on excursions with family — going to antique shops and various other adventures, traveling and he enjoyed his workshop building many craft items. He has been a member of the First United Methodist Church on Chestnut Street in Oneonta for more than 80 years and still enjoys going to church services every Sunday he is in town. He enjoys traveling down South in the winter months to see his two daughters who live in North Carolina and Florida.

He enjoys watching college basketball on television, and has been an avid Boston Red Sox fan for most of his life. He still lives independently in Oneonta and has an apartment in the Plains at Parish Homestead retirement community.

An open house celebration of St. John’s birthday will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday. The public is welcome.
