March 29, 2008 09:04 am Step Back in Time features community news from The Daily Star 25 and/or 50 years ago. 25 years ago March 29, 1983 STAMFORD _ Teams of students from Stamford Central School and Jefferson Central School were big winners in the regional competition "Olympics of the Mind" held in Oneonta March 19. Stamford sent two teams and Jefferson sent one team. All the teams won in their respective categories and will represent the region in the state competition at Cortland State in April. Those participating from Stamford Central School were: Michele Lee, Laurie Johns, Aree Bray, Chris Sarter, Atul Bhatt and Richie Cole, with Mrs. Alida Ryerson as coach. The other Stamford team included Mike Suchy, Kelly Jones, Damon Schnieder, Robert Payne, Chris Oakley and Scott Eighmie, with Mrs. Jamie Seacord as coach. The winning Jefferson team included Shannon Peake, Aaron Miller, Dylon Glas, Brian Fisher and Ann Lis Eklund, under the supervision of teachers Joanne Pindiak, Gary Barden and Patsy Renz. The "Olympics of the Mind" is designed for highly creative and talented students competing in problem-solving activities. 50 years ago March 29, 1958 The econd annual D&H employees' picnic was held at Phillippe Park in Safety Harbor, Fla. Seventeen past and present employees attended with their wives and children, 33 in all. Oneonta came in first in attendance with 15. Others were from Wilkes-Barre, Worcester, Schenectady, Troy and Albany. This was one of the best days in the past three months, 70 degrees all afternoon. Tables were decorated by the women who served a dinner on the shores of Old Tampa Bay in the Palms and Native Oak Grove. The rest of the day was filled in with cards and community singing led by A. H. "Monk" Connors. Arrangements were made by retired trainman John R. Way, formerly of Schenectady. Those attending were: Mr. and Mrs. John R. Way, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cole, Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Potter, Benjamin Stevens and son, Mr. and Mrs. John Duffy and son, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Dewey and Mrs. Valera Elliston of St. Petersburg, Fla. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Zacharias of Madira Beach, Fla.; Mr. and Mrs. A. F. "Monk" Connors of Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; Wright Betting and Mrs. Lilliam Feathers of Clearwater. Fla., Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Gates of Grafton; and Mrs. and Mrs. John Campion of Worcester.
