COOPERSTOWN _ The Glimmerglass Opera Theatre's plans to construct a new auditorium are proceeding on schedule, with completion tentatively set for 1986.

According to Board of Trustees President Thomas Goodyear, the facility will be built on an 18-acre tract of land, donated by Mrs. Bradley Goodyear, at Cary Mede Farm on Lake Otsego, north of Cooperstown. The complex will take full advantage of the landscape, with an outdoor terrace and other public spaces, suitable for picnicking and strolling, overlooking the lake.

Peter George, a well-known acoustical engineer and theatre designer, has been engaged by the Opera Theatre to design the auditorium and working parts of the building. The orchestra pit will hold up to 60 musicians, and Goodyear explained that the theatre will seat between 900 and 1,000 people, while maintaining a sense of intimacy between audience and stage.

The trustees favor a building design that will be compatible with the rural architectural style of the region, and the complex will utilize some of the existing farm buildings, Goodyear added.

Sutton graduated in 1957 after an outstanding high school sports career.
