Courtney Dowsey, 4, of Cooperstown, cuddled a puppy at the new Hyde Park animal shelter on Route 28. Visitors and well wishers for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals gathered under a striped tent for music and refreshments as the SPCA celebrated the shelter’s grand opening Thursday.

Hospitals continued to run on Labor Day, as did bus lines. People, some 45 million of them across the nation, took to the highways and burned millions of gallons of gasoline to keep service station attendants busy.
So for three people, and many others, Labor Day meant just another day of labor. Three of those who worked yesterday were Nurse Jean Adamovitch at Fox Hospital; Bill Schwartz, Pine Hill-Kingston bus driver, and service station attendant Earl Epps.
