HOBART — The National Weather Service forecasts continued 90-degree temperatures for the next five days, but that won’t bother a herd of dairy cows in Hobart. Each one is in a stall equipped with its own little shower.

This week, farmer Frank Migli launched an experiment, installing a network of plastic hose and misting mechanisms to wet 52 cows in his barn on the Back River Road. The system is on a timer that sends a four-minute spritz of water over each of the cows every half hour.

The cows get moistened while the barn fans blow air across their backs.

The effect, said Migli, is that the evaporating water helps to cool the dairy herd, which would normally be uncomfortable in the heat.

“They seem to like it,” said Migli.

Comfortable, contented cows also produce more milk that cows under stress from the sweltering heat, so Migli expects the $300 purchase to pay dividends.

“My production this week is already up a couple of hundred pounds,” he said. “At this rate, it won’t take long to pay for the thing. I’m going to put another one in another part of the barn.”

UNADILLA — The Unadilla Police Department, rounding out six years of service this summer, first came into being in 1957 with a force comprised of Andrew Webb and James Kane.

Since that time four more patrolmen have been added, making the current complement six men under the jurisdiction of Mr. Webb, the acting head.

Mr. Webb said that “It (the six man team of officers) originally started about five years ago to provide better coverage for the village. There were times when Mr. Kane and I were not available and now with six men, there is 24 hour coverage, every day.
