NORWICH — A Norwich fireman said he will keep working until his retirement seven years from now, even though he won Saturday night’s $5 million lottery.

Howard Franklin of Heady’s Corners picked the winning numbers, 3-6-21-33-36-37, at Tucker’s Smoke Shop on East Main Street in Norwich. He said so far he is the sole winner in Saturday’s lottery.

Franklin said he and his wife, Cheryl, plan to use the money to put their four children through school. “I want the kids to get a good education. That’s my main concern,” he said.

“I was working when I found out that I won,” he said. “I was sitting at the table looking at the final numbers. I asked my partner to double check the numbers.”

When a worker at the smoke shop verified the winning combination, Franklin went to the shop and had his ticket validated.

A fireman in the city for 18 years, Franklin said he couldn’t talk for a while after learning he won $5 million.

This is the second time he has won money in the lottery. The first time, a couple years ago, he won $8.

The Public Service Commission Thursday authorized the New York Central Railroad to cease resident freight agent service in Oneonta.

The move, expected ever since a public hearing in June went unopposed, is one more step downward in services for a railroad line that came into being in 1866 as the Rondout and Oswego R.R.

Freight service will be continued to Oneonta over the line with service being in charge of a traveling assistant agent with headquarters in Stamford.

The report from the Public Service Commission noted that gross revenues of less-than-carload freight at Oneonta just barely covered the operating expenses of the station which is to be retired from use.
